Illinois Drivers License Address Change Information

You'll have ten (10) days to notify the Illinois Secretary of State of your new address. It's very important that you make this change for a couple of reasons. First, it's against the law (Sec. 3-416, 6-116 and 6-511) to drive with an old address on your license. Secondly, you won't receive important notices such as renewal information that it usually mailed to you as a reminder. You may go about updating your address in a couple of different manners. Let's go over those:

In Person

Steps

  1. Since the state of Illinois does not allow you to carry two licenses at the same time, you will need to hand in your old license.
  2. Gather up the identification documents that you will need to show (read below to see a list).
  3. Visit any driver services facility office.
  4. Bring payment to pay for the Cost of the address change. You'll see the cost in the row called "Corrected or Duplicate Driver's License".

By Mail

Steps

  1. Compose a letter that shows your old and new address. Also include your driver license number (or ID number). Or you may alternatively download the following Notice of Address Change form and mail it to the address shown on the top.
  2. Send the letter to the following address:
    Driver Services Department
    Central Services
    2701 S. Dirksen Parkway

    Springfield, Illinois 62723
  3. There is no cost to have your address updated.

If you are interested in getting a new license card that shows your new address, you'll have to go In Person to a driver services facility office. They are the only ones that can issue a new license or ID card. There will be a fee to perform a correction on your license (and to receive a new one).

Online

  1. Visit the following page to update your license or ID address.
  2. You will required to enter your driver's license number (or ID num), last digits of your SSN and current address. You may also register to vote in Illinois.
