Kansas Drivers License Renewal Information
Expiration Date
Kansas boasts one of the nations most advanced licenses. Its technology includes the use of ultra violet images and holograms. Every driver renewing will get this new redesigned license design. The expiration date of your license will always fall on your birth date. If you are over twenty one (21) years but less than sixty five (65), your first non commercial license will be valid for six (6) years. If you are sixty (65) or older your license will be valid for a total of four (4) years.
If you are under 21, your license will expire on your 21st birthday. However, as of July 1 2007, a House Bill was passed which allows all drivers who are tuning 21 to have an automatic forty five (45) days extension on their expiring driver's license. Please print out this Rule in case you have any issues with by an officer.
Finally, please remember that you must carry your license on you, at all times while driving.
Renewal Notice
You will receive a renewal notice via mail thirty (30) days before the expiration of your drivers license. The KS DMV will mail the renewal notice to the address on file. If you have moved to a new address please update your address with the DMV. Note: It is always your responsibility to renew on time even though you did not receive a notice.
When To Renew
It’s best if you renew your driver’s license on time. If you would like to prepare before its expiration date, Kansas will allow you to renew your license one (1) year before it expires. However, if you are under the age of 21, you will only be allowed to renew on your 21st birthday.
Expired License
If your license is currently expired, do not drive. You will be ticketed for driving with an expired license. Driving without a valid license is against the law. If your license has been expired, you will need to pay a late fee of $1.00 and you could be asked to retake the driving test. A suspended license due to an alcohol charge will be subject to pay a fee of at least $100 plus a $25 exam fee, to get your license reinstated.
