Vermont Drivers License Renewal Information

Expiration Date

Operator licenses in the Green Mountain State expire either every two (2) years or every four (4) years. It all depends which duration you chose to pay for, when you last obtained your license. If you've forgotten or are unsure of the expiration date, take a look at the front part of your license card. It will clearly display the date which it expires.

Renewal Notice

The VT DMV will send you a renewal packet via mail to your mailing address which is stored in the DMV database. You should receive this renewal reminder approximately thirty (30) days before your expiration. If the DMV does not have the proper mailing address for you on file, you will not receive this reminder. Please notify the DMV of any address changes (you are required to do so by law). You will need a renewal application in order to renew by mail. Please read below for instructions on how to download your form.

When To Renew

Always keep track of your upcoming renewal date in order to give you adequate preparation time.

Expired Vermont License

If unplanned situations prevent you from renewing on time, please don't allow your license to lapse for more than 14 days. If you drive with a license that's expired for more than fourteen (14) days you will be ticketed, as your license is no longer considered active. You should not drive any further. Please make plans to immediately renew it. If you wait longer than three (3) years after its expiration, you will be required to pass all tests (vision, written and driving). If you are on active duty, you are exempt from these expiration laws. Please read the military section below.

Always make sure to follow the driving laws of each state where you are operating a motor vehicle. Failure to do so, may result in tickets, fines and even suspensions. Your driver's license can be suspended for a variety of infractions. DUI's are one example. Accumulating 10 points on your driving record will also cause your license to be suspended.

Restoring your driving license entails serving your suspension period, and paying any reinstatement fees. You will notice that your insurance premium will more than likely increase following a suspension. We invite you to shop for the best insurance rates by using our Car Insurance Guide
