Renewal in a DMV Office

If you visit your local DMV office to renew your license, you will be issued a ten-year license if you are under the age of 65. If you are 65 or older, you will be issued a five-year license. To renew your South Carolina driver’s license in a DMV branch office:

  1. You must pass a vision-screening test or provide an eye examination certificate obtained within the last 12 months from a licensed optometrist or ophthalmologist.
  2. You must provide your vehicle insurance information.

  5. Persons who are 65 years of age or older must renew their driver license every five years.
  6. The fee for a 10-year renewal is $25.00.  The 5-year renewal fee is $12.50.

Online Driver's License Renewals

The Department of Motor Vehicles may no longer renew your driver’s license online due to a clause in South Carolina law that requires customers to submit to a vision screening or present a certificate of eye examination as part of the renewal process.  Section 56-1-220 allowed a person to renew his license for an additional five years by web or mail without a vision screening or certificate of eye examination. This provision ended October 1, 2008.  New legislation must be passed before the SCDMV can continue to renew driver’s licenses on the web.
