To renew an Alaska driver license, you may be eligible to renew through the mail. Otherwise, you will need to renew in person at a DMV Office and:

  • Complete an Application for Alaska Driver License, Permit or State Identification (Form 478)
  • Surrender your current Alaska license
  • Pass a vision test (a new picture will be taken)
  • Pay the required fee
    (License is renewed for 5 years from your date of birth.)
  • CDL only - Pass the haz-mat test if you have this endorsement and wish to keep it.
    A background check will be required to transfer, retain or obtain a hazardous materials endorsement.

If you are over 21, you may renew at any time after your birthday when your license will expire within a year. For example: Current license expires on August 22nd, 2012. You can renew anytime after August 22nd, 2011. If you will be 21 when you license expires, click here for further information.

Note: Alaska does not have a grace period. Once your license is expired, it is not legal for you to drive. If you allow your license to expire over a year, you would need to pass the written test again in order to renew your license.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: If you have obtained a license in another state after your last Alaska license was issued, you must pass the Alaska general rules of the road knowledge test to renew. Your Alaska license number will remain the same.

Changes to license:

  • If you have had eye surgery and can now meet the vision requirements without corrective lenses, you must obtain a new license to remove the restriction.
  • If your name has changed since your last license was issued, you must provide proof of the change. (Marriage certificate from vital statistics, court documents, etc.)
  • If any other information is incorrect, you must bring proof of the correct information. (Birth certificate from vital statistics)

ALCOHOL TEST FOR APPLICANT'S TURNING 21:

First License Issued Prior to October 21st, 2008:

  • Expiration date of your license should be on your actual birthday.
  • Alcohol Awareness test not required.
  • You may renew up to a year before the expiration date.
  • License will be renewed for 5 years and expire on your birthday.

First License Issued On or After October 21st, 2008:

  • Expiration date of your license should be 90 days AFTER your 21st birthday.
  • Alcohol Awareness test is required before you are eligible to renew.
  • You must wait until you are 21 to renew.
  • License will be renewed for 5 years and expire on your birthday.

LICENSE EXTENSION LETTER:

If an Alaska resident is temporarily out of state and discovers that their license is expired, an extension letter can be mailed or faxed to extend the expiration date. CDL extensions are limited to 30 days. Extension requests must be made in writing and either mailed or faxed as follows:

College Student ~ Renewing an Alaska License or ID Card s an Alaska resident attending college outside of Alaska, you are welcome to renew your driver license or state identification card (ID) through the mail. Your license or ID card expires 90 days after your 21st birthday. If you will not be in Alaska between your 21st birthday and the expiration date shown on your Alaska driver license and/or ID card, please follow the instructions below to renew.

DRIVER LICENSE RENEWAL:

You are welcome to start the process after your 20th birthday. Keep in mind that the test scores are valid for 1 year.

DMV will provide you with a print-out of your passing test score. Take the print-out with you when you return to college, as you will need proof that you have passed the test in order to renew your license. If you are unable to pass the test while in Alaska, please contact Juneau Driver Licensing for other options available to you.

E-Mail Juneau Driver Licensing or call (907) 465-4361 and request a Remote Area License Application. The Juneau Driver Licensing Office will mail an application to you.

Once you receive the Remote Area License Application, please complete the form in full, sign the form, and mail all of the following items to the address shown at the bottom of the page.

  • Remote Area License Application (Form 480)
  • Personal check, money order or credit card authorization. (Fee is $21.00)
  • Print-out as proof you have passed the Alcohol Awareness Test.
  • Copy of two pieces of identification.

Changes to license:

  • If your name has changed since your last license was issued, you must provide proof of the change. Original documents are required and will be returned to you with your renewed license. (Marriage certificate from vital statistics, court documents, etc.)

You are welcome to start the process one month before your 21st birthday.

Eligibility

You may be eligible to renew your Alaska Driver's License or State Identification (ID) Card by mail. If your license or ID card is due to expire within one year, please check below to see if you may qualify to renew by mail.

  • Must be 22* to 68 years of age when renewing your Driver's License (you may not renew by mail if you are 69 years of age or older on the expiration date of the driver's license being renewed).
  • Must be 22* years of age when renewing an ID card.
    *If you are 20 or 21 and attending college outside of Alaska, click here for information.
  • Must hold a non-commercial Driver's License or ID card.
  • The last time you renewed your Driver's License or ID card, you must have renewed in person. Commercial Driver's Licenses are not eligible for renewal by mail.
  • A name change will require a visit to the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) with documentation to provide proof of the change.
  • If you wish to renew your Driver's License, it must be valid (it cannot be cancelled, revoked, suspended or disqualified).
  • The last Driver's License issued to you must have been an Alaska license.

If you meet these qualifications, you may apply for a renewal of your Alaska Driver's License or ID card. Further verification will be conducted at the DMV to determine eligibility.
