In order to renew your license at the local Office of Motor Vehicles:

  • You may renew your driver’s license 180 days in advance of the date of expiration.
  • Please take your driver’s license and proof of insurance, if you own an automobile, to a local Office of Motor Vehicles.
  • All applicants renewing a Class D and E license are required to pass the vision test.
  • If you renew on time or within 10 calendar days after your birthday no penalty is due. After ten days, a penalty is due. No exceptions.

NOTE: If your license expires, you can be subject to a traffic citation.

Driver's license renewal invitations are issued to all qualified applicants about 100 days in advance of the month of expiration. If you do not receive the invitation, it will be necessary for you to renew your driver's license at your local Office of Motor Vehicles. Please note: Louisiana law does not allow consecutive renewals of driver's licenses by mail, internet or telephone. The criteria for this program is listed in Section 1, Policy 4.01.

  • The following items are required to renew your driver's license:
    • Computer generated mail-in renewal invitation
    • Your photo Louisiana driver's license which you have in your possession.
    • Valid credit card backed by Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express
  • If your address is different than what appears on the face of your license, you are not eligible for internet renewal. Louisiana law requires your current address to appear on the face of your license. You must visit an office to renew.
     
  • You must use Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher OR Netscape 4.73 or higher to successfully complete your transaction.
     
  • Your license renewal will include a State Charge for electronic commerce in accordance with Louisiana Revised Statute 49:316.1.
     
  • NOTICE: Louisiana Law requires that all vehicles you have registered be currently covered with the required limits of liability insurance or other security as provided under R.S. 32:861 et al.  The law is enforced by civil and criminal penalty.
     
  • Changes in personal information, including address, are not allowed by using the Internet, telephone, or mail-in method of renewal.  If you require any changes, you must visit your local Office of Motor Vehicles for issuance of a new driver's license.
     
  • Please note that your Driver's License renewal invitation may indicate a renewal fee greater than what is indicated on our web site. This is due to the removal of the $15 application fee. The fee indicated on the web site is the correct fee for your renewal.

Who can use the OMV ExpressLane to process a renewal?

Anyone who receives a Louisiana computer generated renewal invitation through the mail and has a valid credit card or debit card backed by Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express is eligible to use the ExpressLane.

Yes you will receive a new Driver’s License/ID card however at the time of your next renewal, you will be required to visit a field office to have a new driver's license/ID card produced with an updated photo.
