Age 18 and over

When to Renew:

You may renew your Texas Driver License or Identification Card up to one year prior to the current expiration date.  Texas does not have a grace period to extend driving privileges beyond the expiration date. The following options are available to renew:

How To Renew

  1. Online, you must meet the eligibility criteria (See Below). 
  2. By telephone, 1-866-DL RENEW (1-866-357-3639), eligibility criteria.
  3. By mail if you have received an invitation. Send check or money order made payable to TXDPS, enter your social security number, and submit a photocopy of liability insurance or the enclosed non-ownership of a motor vehicle affidavit.
  4. By visiting a Texas Driver License office, you will be required to present proof of identity  (See Below), Lawful Presence  (See Below), and proof of Social Security Number  (See Below),  pass the vision exam and pay the required fees, if your license is valid or not expired for more than two years. 

Note: Driver licenses or ID cards that have been expired for more than two years cannot be renewed. To obtain a driver license or ID card, the individual:

  1. Must apply in person as a new applicant at a driver license office, and
  2. Meet all of the requirements for a new ID card or driver license (including taking the knowledge and driving tests).

Under age 18

If you are under age 18 and renewing a learner's license, provisional license or identification card, you must visit a Texas Driver License Office to present and complete the following:
  1. Proof of identity, proof of Lawful Presence and Social Security Number
  2. Pass the vision exam.
  3. Present the Verification of Enrollment (VOE) form (CDD-104), high school diploma or GED. 
  4. If removing a "B" restriction from the license, present the completion certificate of Driver Education. 

Renew Online or By Phone

Eligibility to Renew Online or By Phone:

You must meet the following requirements to renew online:

  1. You renewed your driver license in person at a driver license office last time.
  2. You have a Class C or CM driver license. You cannot renew a Class A, Class B or commercial driver license online.
  3. Your driver license either expires in less than one year, or it expired less than two years ago.
  4. You are at least 18 years of age and your driver license is not a provisional or learner license.
  5. You are younger than 79 years of age.
  6. Your vision and your physical and mental condition have not changed since your last renewal in a way that affects your ability to drive safely.
  7. Your license is valid (not suspended or revoked), and you do not have any warrants or unpaid tickets.
  8. Your Social Security Number is already on file.
  9. You are a U.S. citizen.

You must have all of the following items to renew online:

  1. Your current driver license;
  2. A printer to print your temporary driver license and payment receipt–it will not be emailed to you;
  3. A valid credit card: MasterCard, Visa, Discover or American Express only;
  4. The last four digits of your Social Security Number.

Online

By Phone

Call 1-866-DL RENEW (1-866-357-3639) to renew by phone.

By Mail

Individuals who received an invitation to renew by mail can renew by mail, online or by phone. To renew by mail, please follow all of the instructions on the form.

In Person

Note: If you have not renewed in person at a driver license office in the past six years, you may be asked to present proof of lawful presence (See below). 

Individuals who are not eligible to renew online, by phone or by mail, must visit a driver license office to renew in person.

Out-of-State

Individuals may renew or request a replacement of their Texas driver license or ID card while living outside of the state if their true, fixed and permanent home (domicile) is in Texas.

Examples of people living outside of the state who have Texas domicile include certain U.S. military members, students whose parents live in Texas and people temporarily living outside of Texas for work.

A new driver license or ID card will be mailed within 45 days after DPS receives the request.

Required Items for All Out-of-State Requests

To renew or request a replacement driver license or ID card:

  1. Complete an application for out-of-state.
    1. The address field is the Texas address that appears on your driver license or ID card.
    2. The mailing address field is your current address.
  2. Complete an application for a renewal or replacement/duplicate.
    1. If you are requesting a replacement driver license or ID card, only answer questions 1 – 8.
    2. If you are renewing, answer all of the questions.
  3. Send the required fees. We accept checks or money orders payable toTexas DPS.
  4. If you have not already done so, send a copy of your documents to verify your:
    1. U.S. citizenship or lawful presence status
    2. Social Security Number

Renewals

To renew, the driver license or ID card:

  1. Will expire in less than one year, or
  2. Expired less than two years ago.

In addition to the items required for all out-of-state requests, mail the following items that apply:

  1. Individuals who renewed online, by phone or by mail the last time must complete the Explanation For Eye Specialist.
  2. Individuals renewing a Class A or Class B noncommercial driver license must complete the Exemption Certification.

U.S. military members who qualify (see below for details) are exempt from this requirement.

Individuals 79 years of age or older cannot renew their driver license by mail.

Active-Duty and Recently Discharged Military Members

Active-duty members of the U.S. military or individuals who separated from the military less than 90 days ago can renew a driver license or ID card that has been expired for more than two years.

In addition to the requirements listed for all out-of-state requests, individuals must mail:

Provisional Licenses

Individuals who hold a provisional license must renew in person at a driver license office, regardless of their age.

Commercial Driver Licenses

If you hold a Commercial Driver License OR are 79 years of age or older, all transactions must be completed in person at a Texas Driver License office.

Primary identification

These items are complete within themselves and require no supporting instruments: These documents must contain the applicant's complete name and full date of birth.

An applicant must present either: two secondary documents or one secondary and two supporting documents
to establish identity
  • Original or certified copy of a birth certificate issued by the appropriate State Bureau of Vital Statistics or equivalent agency from a U.S. state, U.S. territory, the District of Columbia, or a Canadian province. A birth record issued by a hospital is not acceptable under this category.
  • Original or certified copy of U.S. Dept. of State Certification of Birth Abroad (issued to U. S. citizens born abroad) (Form FS-240, DS-1350, or FS-545)
  • Original or certified copy of court order with name and date of birth (DOB) indicating an official change of name and/or gender from a U.S. state, U.S. territory, the District of Columbia, or Canadian province.

Lawful Presence Requirement

The Department of Public Safety requires applicants who are not U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, lawful permanent residents, refugees, or asylees to present proof of lawful presence in the U.S. before being issued an original, renewal, or duplicate Texas driver license or identification card.
 
To verify U.S. Citizenship, lawful permanent residence, U.S. national, refugee, or asylee status the applicant can present one of the following:
 
  • Certificate of Birth issued by appropriate U.S. State, Territory, or District of Columbia
  • Department of State Certification of birth issued to U.S. Citizens born abroad (Form FS-240, DS-1350, or FS-545)
  • Certificate of U.S. Citizenship (Form N-560, N-561, N-645)
  • U.S. Dept. of Justice – INS U.S. Citizenship Identification Card (Form I-197)
  • U.S. Dept. of Justice – INS Identification Card for Resident Citizen of the U.S. (Form I-179)
  • U.S. Passport

All others who are NOT a citizen, national, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee must present:

  • Valid documentation issued by the U.S. Dept. of Justice, U.S. Dept. of State, U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security,  or U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, that shows LAWFUL TEMPORARY ADMISSION to the U.S. A list of acceptable documents can be found in the Temporary Visitor Issuance Guide (PDF).
Border Crossing cards alone are NOT acceptable for establishing a lawful temporary admission for a license or identification card.
