District of Columbia Drivers Permit Information

To get your drivers license in District of Columbia, you need to apply for a regular non commercial Class D drivers license. You must have a District of Columbia license within thirty (30) days of establishing residency. You must give up any other Drivers License that you have previously held from any other State.

District of Columbia Drivers License Requirements

21 years and under (Gradual Rearing of Adult Drivers - GRAD)

  • Learner's Permit 

    • A few of the requirements:
      • You must be at least 16 years of age.
      • Parent or Legal Guardian consent.
      • Forty (40) hours of driving experience.
      • Must have an adult with you at all times.

  • Provisional License

    • A few of the requirements:
      • You must be at least 16 and 1/2 years of age.
      • You must have held a Learner Permit (see above) for at least six (6) months.
      • Forty (40) hours of driving experience.
      • You can drive by yourself.

  • Full License With Conditions

    • A few of the requirements:
      • You must be at least 17 years of age and not older than 21 years.
      • You must have held a Provisional License (see above) for at least six (6) months.
      • Ten (10) hours of night driving experience.

    • Valid for one (1) year.
    • Take and pass the Eye and Knowledge Test.
