Idaho License Expiration Dates

The expiration date of your license will be set between four (4) and eight (8) years. The 8 year renewal is only valid for drivers between the ages of 21 and 62. Its expiration date will always fall on your birthday, either on the fourth or eighth year (from the year in which it was issued).

Renewal Notice / Info

The DMV will send you a renewal notice to the address listed on your driving record file sixty (60) days before your license’s expiration date. That’s why it’s very important to always maintain a current address on file with the DMV. If you move and get a new address please make sure to follow the change of address instructions that we’ve prepared for you.

When To Renew

It’s best if you renew your driver’s license on, or before its expiration date. You can also prepare ahead of time, and apply for renewal 25 months before its expiration date. If you are unable to renew before it expires, try to not to wait longer than one (1) year. If your license has been expired for over 1 year, then you will need to retake the written and skills tests.

Renew Online

Idaho does not allow online renewing of your drivers license. However, you can prepare ahead of time and download your checklist by signing up HERE.

Renew by Mail

This option is only available for drivers between the ages of twenty one (21) and sixty nine (69). However, this option is only available if:

  • Your current license has an expiration date of four (4) years.
  • You do not have an extension on your current drivers license.

There will be an extra charge of $1.00, which is called a sheriff administrative fee, for processing via mail. After your license renewal application is accepted by the DMV, you will receive your renewed license in the mail. Your picture from your previous license will be used. Finally, it’s important to note that any changes to your license (name or address change), will have to be made in person at a local idaho dmv office.

Renewal for Military Drivers

Active duty military drivers and dependents have the option of applying for a renewal extension of up to four (4) years. There will be an added cost of $10.00 for processing the extension.
