Tennessee Drivers License Information

To get your drivers license in Tennessee, you need to apply for a Regular Class D drivers license. You must have a Tennessee license within thirty (30) days of establishing residency. You must give up any other Drivers License that you have previously held from any other State.  Please have your Tennessee license with you at all times, its the law.

Tennessee Drivers License Requirements

18 years and under (Graduated Driver License Program)

  • Learner Permit

    • A few of the requirements:
      • You must be at least 15 years of age.
      • Parent or Legal Guardian written approval.
      • Must have an adult with you at all times.

  • Intermediate Restricted License

    • A few of the requirements:
      • You must be at least 16 years of age.
      • Parent or Legal Guardian written approval.
      • You must have had a Learner Permit (see above) for at least one hundred and eighty (180) days
      • Fifty (50) hours of total driving and ten (10) must be at night.

  • Intermediate Unrestricted License

    • A few of the requirements:
      • You must be at least 17 years of age.
      • Parent or Legal Guardian written approval.
      • You must have had an Intermediate Restricted License (see above) for one (1) year.
