We’ll supply you with a checklist, and all of the important forms, rules, and steps. Please continue reading below to get started with your Nevada license renewal.

Nevada Drivers License Renewal Information

Expiration Date

Your license in the Battle Born State will expire every four (4) years and therefore must be renewed every 4 years. The date of expiration will always fall on your date of birth. The only exception is foreign drivers who are temporary living here in Nevada. If you are still unsure of your expiration date, just take a look at your license and it will have a row for the expiration date. Please take a look below at a sample Nevada license.

As a final note, always carry your license while driving a motor vehicle. You may be asked to show it by law enforcement. Please file for a replacement in the event that you lose your current one.

Renewal Notice

Approximately sixty (60) days before your Nevada driver's license expires, the DMV will mail you a renewal reminder. This notice is very important because it will tell you exactly what you need to do in order to renew your license. Hopefully, you'll be able to conveniently renew either online or by mail. Since the DMV requires that you update them with your latest mailing address, if you have moved recently, there is chance that you will not receive the notice. An address change must be done as soon as possible after moving. If you did not receive the notice, don't worry. You may still contact them by submitting an online request. You must enter your name, email address, address, phone number, birth date, drivers license number (last 4 digits) and social security number (last 4 digits). You may also give them a call at any of the following numbers. The renewal notice is a helpful reminder, but if you do not receive one, and allow your license to expire, you are the only one at fault.

When To Renew

The NV DMV will give you ample time to renew ahead of your expiration date. They do not set any limitations on when you are able to renew. You may walk into your closest nevada dmv office whenever you wish. The only change will be in the expiration date of your new license because it will be set according to how early you renewed. If six (6) months or less exist between the time when you renew and your expiration date, you will be given a license that lasts four (4) years. If more than 6 months exist but less than 1 year, your new renewed license will only be valid for three (3) years

Expired Nevada License

Renewing on time before your license expires is the ideal option because you will not have to deal with additional rules at renewal time. However, the DMV knows that not everyone will be able to prepare before their expiration. Going over your expiration date will have an impact on whether you may conveniently renew by mail or not. Let's take a look at your options:

If you are currently living in Nevada and your renewal notice gave you the option of renewing by mail

  • If your license has expired for thirty (30) days or less, you may still renew by mail.
  • If your license has expired for more than thirty (30) days but less than twelve (12) months, you must go in person. Additionally, you are required to show your Identification documents and retake the knowledge test.
  • If your license has expired for more than four (4) years, you must go in person. Additionally, you are required to retake all tests.

If you are currently away from Nevada and your renewal notice gave you the option of renewing by mail

  • If your license has expired for less than twelve (12) months, you are still allowed to renew by mail.
  • If you are serving with the U.S. military and are currently out of state, and your license has expired for more than two (2) years, you may not renew by mail.

If your license is found to be in suspension, you will not be allowed to renew. This includes suspensions that occurred in any U.S. state. Reasons for having your license suspended range from DUI convictions, hitting a pedestrian, not having financial responsibility, failing to pay child support, etc. You will receive a notice stating the conditions of your suspension or revocation that you must obey in order to restore your driving rights. It's normal to see an increase in your car insurance rates following tickets or suspensions. Our Insurance Guide will help you get a free insurance quote.
