California Drivers License Address Change Information
By law, if you've changed your mailing address, it must be changed with the DMV within ten (10) days of getting your new address. Regardless of what method you elect to make the change, you must carry proper proof that you've been updated your address with the DMV. Each section below will explain what must be done to properly abide by the CA licensing rules.
By Mail

In order to change your address by mail, you will need to fill out the DMV 14 Change of Address form. You may get this form in two different manners.

Download the DMV 14 form directly from the CA DMV's website.

Call the DMV directly at the following toll free number: 800-777-0133. Make sure to ask that the Notice of Change of Address form be mailed to you.

You have the option of filling out the form online, or printing it out and writing down the information. It will ask for your current name, driver's license number, date of birth, new residential address, new mailing address, license plate number of any vehicles or vessels that you own, whether your car is leased or not, and your old mailing address.

Complete the form and mail to the address on the top of the form. The address is the following:

There is no cost to update your address.
Note: You are not done yet. You must still complete one more step. Grab a piece of paper, and write down your new mailing address (with ink), and put today's date and your signature. You must always carry this piece of paper with you at all times while driving. You may not stick or staple this piece of paper to your existing license card. It must be carried separately.
In Person
You may optionally visit any office to have your driver's license address changed.

You'll need to fill out a DMV 14 Change of Address Form and hand it to a DMV employee.

The DMV personnel will update your address in the database, and give you a DL 43 certificate for proof of the change. You must always carry this certificate with you while driving.

Requirements to Change your Address Online

You must have a CA drivers license or CA identification card.

You must have a Social Security Number.

Your mailing address must be a U.S. address. Foreign addresses are not allowed to use this system.

Your address cannot be that of an a U.S. Army post office (or fleet office).

If updating the address on your CA commercial driver license, you must reside in the state of California.
If you are not allowed to change your address online, you must either use the by mail instructions or show up in person.

You will be required to create an online account in order to complete your request. To create your account with the CA DMV, you'll be asked to create a userID and password. Additionally, you'll be asked to enter your email address, two (2) security questions and answers, give your drivers license or ID number, birth date, last digits of your SSN, and the date in which your license or ID was issued.
