Illinois Drivers License Name Change Information

Illinois makes it a requirement (by law) to notify the SOS (Secretary of State) of your new name. You have ten (10) days to do this. The following are the two different ways in which to process your name change.

In Person

Steps

  1. Make sure to bring your current license (that has the old name). You will need to hand it in because you may not have two different licenses.
  2. Prepare your Identification and name change documents (read below for details on the list of documents).
  3. Locate and drive to a driver services facility in Illinois.
  4. Bring payment to pay for the Cost of the name change. Look at the row titled "Corrected or Duplicate Driver's License".
    • Note: If you do not want to have a new license issued (with the new name), you can simply update your name without paying the fee. You will not receive a new updated license.

By Mail

Steps

  1. Create a letter to the Illinois Driver Services. Make sure to include your old and new name. Also include your drivers license or ID number.
  2. Send the letter to the following address:
    Driver Services Department
    Central Services
    2701 S. Dirksen Parkway

    Springfield, Illinois 62723
  3. There is no cost to have your name updated.

This letter is sufficient to have your name officially updated with the Illinois Secretary of State. However, if you would like a new license with your new name, you will have to visit a driver services facility office in person, and request a new license. There is a cost to do this.
