Illinois Drivers Permit Information

To get your drivers license in Illinois, you need to apply for a regular Class D drivers license. You must have an Illinois license within ninety (90) days of establishing residency. You must give up any other Drivers License that you have previously held from any other State.

Illinois Drivers License Requirements

18 years and under (Graduated Driver License - GDL)

  • Permit Phase

    • A few of the requirements:
      • You must be 15 years of age.
      • Parent or Legal Guardian consent.
      • Must have illinois drivers ed.
      • Fifty (50) hours of driving experience which shall include ten (10) hours of night driving.
      • Must have an adult with you at all times.

  • Initial Licensing Phase

    • A few of the requirements:
      • You must be 16 or 17 years of age.
      • You must have held a Permit (see above) for at least nine (9) months.
      • Must have illinois drivers ed.
      • Parent or Legal Guardian consent.
      • Fifty (50) hours of driving experience which shall include ten (10) hours of night driving.

  • Full Licensing Phase

    • You must be between 18 and 20 years of age.

    • No restrictions.

18 years and over

  • Learner's Permit 

    • Valid for two (2) years.
    • Take and pass the Vision and Written Exams.

  • Regular Class D Drivers License

    • Take and pass the Vision, Written and Driving Exams.
