Montana Drivers Permit Information

To get your drivers license in  Montana, you need to apply for a basic Class D drivers license. You must have a Montana license within sixty (60) days of establishing residency. You must carry your license at all times. 

Montana Drivers License Requirements

18 years and under (Graduated Driver Licensing)

  • Full Driver License Class D

    • You must be at least 16 years old.
    • Must meet Permit and First Year Restricted License Requirements (see below)

  • First Year Restricted License

    • Must have held Permit for at least six (6) months.

  • Permit

    • You must be at least 15 years old.
    • Must have traffic education program (Drivers ed).
    • Must have 50 hours of supervised driving.
    • Must always be supervised.

  • Traffic Education Leaner's License (TELL)

    • You must be at least 14 years and 1/2 old.
    • Must have traffic education program (Drivers ed).
    • Must always be supervised.

18 years and over

  • Full Driver License Class D
