Texas Drivers License Name Change Information

Texas law requires you to update your driver’s license name with the DPS, within thirty (30) days of acquiring your new name. The only way to process the name change is to go in person to your closest DPS office.

Steps

  1. Locate and visit any driver license office.
  2. Be prepared to pay for the $11.00 COST of the name change.
  3. Bring your Proof of Name Change documents (see below).

Documents Required

When going in person to your nearest DPS office, please have one of the following documents with you.

  • Marriage License.
  • Divorce Decree.
  • Amended Birth Certificate
  • Court Order (must be certified).

Note:

  • If you are not changing your name due to a marriage, death of spouse, or divorce, then you must present either an amended birth certificate OR a court order (certified).
  • If your marriage license OR divorce decree is from another country, and is not written in English, then it must be certifiably translated to English.
  • Texas will not accept licenses from same sex marriages.
